Project 9: Portfolio

Portfolio (Scribd.com):

Project Corrections / Time spent: I spent 20 minutes redoing my Event Ad because it was very dark and needed a left alignment so I changed the box colors on the bottom to blue and orange. I spent 30 minutes redoing my business card because I wanted to see different ways I could improve it  so I went from portrait to landscape on the front, and changed where the pink box was as well a the purple line and text color. I spent 40 minutes redoing my Letterhead trying to add more repetition that followed my business card by making my name stand out more by itself and changing the location of the purple line as well as the pink box on the bottom. I spent 20 minutes redoing my montage because the quote had to much kearning so I chose one that was more visually appealing and I also blended the hands more and moved them up. I spent 20 minutes redoing my flyer because it needed better alignment and the title wasn’t easy to read so I moved the up the picture.

P8-OliviaWaddell-Inside

Description: A two sided brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills) I first sketched out ideas for my logo. I then opened Adobe Illustrator to start my design for my logo. After I finished I opened Adobe Indesign and opened a new document with two pages. I then used the ruler tool to form where each side of my tri-fold would be.

Next I began looking for pictures that would work well with my color scheme and for my audience. I then wrote my body copy thinking about what the most important information would be for my audience. I then took colors from my logo and placed them onto each fold in my brochure.  After I place my pictures, body copy, headings, and logo onto the appropriate fold. I used boxes around the headings of each fold to bring repetition while bringing out every color from my color scheme.

For the jet ski I opened up Adobe Photoshop and used the quick selection tool to remove the background. I then used the refine mask tool to smooth, feather, shift edge, and apply contrast to the outside of the jet ski. I then placed the jet ski into Indesign and used the text wrap option around the alpha channel of the jet ski. I then slanted the jet ski to bring in contrast to the brochure.

Project 7: Web Page

P7OliviaAndersonScreenshot

Description: A web page designed to show and explain a logo I created.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used text wrangler to host my HTML and CSS documents. I first made my HTML and then inserted my CSS as a link in the HTML. It was interesting to learn how the two programs work together. I was able to use the Photoshop eye dropper tool to find the exact colors I needed so I could put the correct hex codes into my CSS to match my logo. When I chose my fonts I put backups incase the browser used doesn’t have my first choice of font. For my background I found a free image and inserted it as a jpeg into CSS and positioned it to the correct position.

Business Card (Large Layout)

OlivaAndersonDescription: A personal created logo with a matching business card and letterhead.

Process: I first sketched out on paper different designs for a logo. I then created the logo on Adobe Illustrator. I used a square and rectangle for the top of the dress and a square for the bottom. I then converted the square to look like the bottom of a dress.

Next I saved my design and opened a two page document in Adobe Indesign. I then started on my business card and made two cards 3.5′ x 2′. I then placed my logo on the top of the front of my card and added my business information. I contrasted my name in 12 point font with the body being in 8 point font. I added the light pink box to bring attention to my information. For the back of my card I changed my font on my logo to white and placed it card.

On the second page for my letter head I first placed my logo in the left corner leaving plenty of space by the edges. Next I added my information again making my name bigger. I then added a light pink box that would make a full bleed off of the letter head. I also added a indigo line to bring emphasis to my name. I made that line on the bottom as well to bring repetition.

Message: For women who are getting married that want to buy their wedding dress at a professional yet fun boutique in the heart of Dallas Texas.

Chipotle on the runs

This week one of the most popular fast food restaurants, Chipotle, was accused of giving over 30 people E. Coli in the states of Washington and Oregon. Upon this news, Chipotle immediately closed 43 restaurants in those two states out of caution.

Katrina Hedberg, an epidemiologist with the Oregon Health Authority, said there are 12 confirmed cases of E. Coli in the state and at least eight of those people became ill after eating at Chipotle. While in Washington it was reported there were 25 people sickened and 23 of those people ate at Chipotle.

Hedberg is encouraging anyone who has eaten at Chipotle, and is experiencing symptoms of extreme diarrhea, to immediately seek health care.

Along with closing 43 restaurants, Chipotle also stated in their press release that they would be taking the following actions:

  • Conducting additional deep cleaning and full sanitization of its restaurants in the area;
  • Conducting environmental testing in its restaurants, and food testing in its restaurants and distribution centers in addition to testing being conducted by health department officials;
  • Replacing all food items in the restaurants we closed, out of an abundance of caution;
  • Batch testing some ingredients before resupplying;
  • Continuing to help in the investigation; and
  • Retaining two preeminent food safety consulting firms (including Seattle-based IEH Laboratories and Consulting Group) to help the company assess and improve upon its already high standards for food safety.

Steven Ellis, Chairman and Co-CEO of Chipotle said in a statement “The safety of our customers and integrity of our food supply has always been our highest priority.” Ellis continued to say they work with very fresh ingredients to serve customers with the best quality and push themselves to do better.

The investigating health officials have determined no official cause, but continued investigation is occurring.

It’s safe to say I’ll be avoiding Chipotle, possibly all fast food chains that sell meat products, until the investigation is wrapped up. I wonder if this Chipotle E. Coli outbreak has anything to do with the 167 K of ground beef that the USDA recalled earlier today?

This is what the public is saying about Chipotle:

Project 5: Logos

OliviaAndersonP5Logos

Description: Logo for a Burger Restaurant.

Process: I first sketched out different logo ideas and then chose my top three favorite and created them on Adobe Indesign. I then took a vote on which one of the three design was the most popular.  On this project I worked with different fonts that would appeal to my audience and work with the design. I used layering on the burger to put each “food” together and I wanted the burger to stand out so I added different colors to it and made the logo fun. I also aligned the “burger “with the rest of the word burger. In my last step I took the winning logo and and put it with a different font color and background.

Program Used: Adobe Illustrator

Message: Burger square has the best burgers in town.

Audience: Young adults and families who love to eat burgers.

Top Thing Learned: How to layer objects in Illustrator.

One bad egg

CEO of American Egg Board, Joann Ivy recently stepped down from her position that was set to end December 31st. The early resignation is believed to have happened because of a release of emails showing Ivy “trying to stop the sale” of Hampton Creek’s product “Just Mayo,” a vegan mayonnaise sold at Whole Foods. The emails showed the board discussing the companies name “Just Mayo” and whether to report it to the FDA for being misleading. Mike Spencer, who is a leader at AEB(American Egg Board) joked about killing Hampton Creeks CEO while many others chimed in with jokes like putting a “gangster-style” hit on the CEO. Emails also showed Ivy accepting a consultant offer to keep “Just Mayo” off of the shelves.

The USDA runs the AEB board and stated they encourage a level playing field to promote all agricultural endeavors. They also stated they don’t “condone any effort to limit competing products in commerce.” The USDA is working on an administrative review of the American Egg Board and says with all this information it will take some time to complete. I find it interesting that the company behind the controversy is the one investigating it.

In a statement about the investigation of the American Egg Board, Hampton Creek Chief Executive Josh Tetrick said “Some, not all, of these check off programs act in a way that is not aligned with building a healthier and more sustainable food system. It’s our hope that this is the first step toward reforming them. The actions that were in the case against Hampton Creek are actually against building a food system that’s for everyone.”

AEB has still not put out a statement or posted anything about the resignation on any social media but maybe their CEO stepping down was that statement. From the public relations standpoint I think Ivy was right in stepping down because it shows that the company is taking action in relation to the investigation.

Project 4: Montage

OliviaAnderson-P4Montage-Hands

Description: A spiritual montage made by blending two images and a background.

Process:

  1. Opened Photoshop and cropped the background to 8.5 x 11.
  2. I selected the image of Jesus Christ and the children around him, placed the photo on the right side of the background, and added a mask.
  3. Using 10% – 20% opacity and a white paint brush I painted the hard edges of the image so the background and photo would blend.
  4. I repeated that process with the adult and child holding hands.
  5. I left white space above and below the hands that helped simplify the photo
  6. I used to different fonts to put emphasis on the important words. Also I added a outer glow and drop shadow around the quote to make it stand out and be legible.
  7. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop

Message: I wanted to convey a spiritual message that Jesus Christ will always lead and help everyone throughout their life.

Audience: Anyone who wants to feel uplifted and remember where they can find help.

Top Thing Learned: How to blend two images and be artistic with them.

What’s your review on Amazon?

As many people rely on reviews to make purchases online, Amazon was recently found suing over 1000 people for fake product reviews.

The target people they are suing comes from the website Fiverr.com where many account holders were writing reviews for as little as $5.

In the complaint filed by Amazon in the Seattle court it reads “Most of the defendants offer positive or 5-star reviews for Amazon sellers’ products. Indeed, many encourage the Amazon seller to create the text for their own reviews.”

Amazon was very upset as the fraud reviews are “misleading Amazon’s customers and tarnishing Amazons brand for their own profit.” According to the complaint.

In attempt investigation to find these frauds posting reviews on Amazon, they bought fake reviews in the process.

I know as a Prime member of Amazon I question after hearing what has happened if some of the products I buy have a lot of fake reviews. I wonder if this will be a problem in the future.

I think that it’s a good thing on Amazon’s part to perform a investigation on the fake reviews because it shows customers like myself that Amazon doesn’t take fraud actions lightly.

While for the company Fiverr they are said to be working with Amazon and released a statement that said, “we actively remove services that violate our terms of use. “

They continued to say merchants paying for people to write illegitimate reviews can happen to any online platform.

Julie Law who is spokesperson for Amazon said “We continue to use a number of mechanisms to detect and remove the small fraction of reviews that violate our guidelines.” Law also stated on behalf of Amazon that there “goal is to make reviews as useful as possible for customers.”

Fake reviews can be a problem for any online company and I think Amazon has done well in letting the public know what has happened and what they’re doing to fix the problem.
